Precision Engineering Award Winner Pat Small

Supporting Precision Engineering at I.T. Sligo

IT Sligo Precision Engineering Industry Bursaries are now available for CAO applicants.

Ward Automation are delighted to be among industry companies providing this great opportunity for anyone interested in studying Precision Engineering and Design at IT Sligo.

Student work placement opportunities have been facilitated at Ward Automation for many years.

The work placement year allows students to learn new skills and get hands-on experience working with a highly-skilled team.

Previous students from the Level 8 Honours Degree in Precision Engineering & Design have undertaken an internship at Ward Automation and returned to work with the company after graduating.

Mechanical Design Engineer Pat Small came to Ward Automation for a yearlong work placement after completing the 3rd year of the degree course Precision, Engineering & Design at Sligo I.T.

“I chose that particular course because it offered a work placement option which gave me the chance to progress at Ward Automation while completing my degree. It allowed me to build on the theory studied at Sligo I.T. with practical elements that I would learn in the workplace.”

While on work placement at Ward Automation, he lists mechanical design, solid works and working with different components as some of the things he learned.

Ward Automation promotes a culture of learning throughout the company with a mentoring program and numerous opportunities for further training for all staff while in employment.

Pat then returned to Sligo I.T. to finish the degree course where he received a First Class Honors and the award for highest achiever in course of study. He was able to use his experience while working as a design intern at Ward Automation to help him with his studies, especially when designing a gantry robot.

Pat’s advice for engineering students is to “follow a route you enjoy but be willing to work hard and adapt.”

Ward Automation along with other industry companies including Avenue Mould and Ophardt Hygiene will award the bursary to students on successful completion of first year exams.
